Theatre Training
Summer Academy 2008 - The Summer Academy is a five-week professional theatre training program for 30 selected young actors, ages 12 to 18, who wish to explore, define and develop the actor in themselves. Open to students of all levels of theatre experience, Summer Academy provides quality training for the beginning actor, as well as advanced level study for the young actor with previous experience. Led by Geva's professional artists who are passionate and skilled in working with young actors, courses will include Acting, Voice and Diction, Movement, Monologues, Expansions, Song Preparation, Singing Ensemble and Rehearsal/Production. In addition, a weekly Master Class led by a guest instructor or speaker may be included. The theme of the 2008 program is musical theatre. The program will culminate in a showcase of the students' work, on Geva's Mainstage, open to the public. Students will be granted a certificate of completion from the Summer Academy 2008 program. The focus of Summer Academy 2009 will be Shakespeare, and auditions will be held in March. Please check back for information early in 2009, or call the Education Department at 232-1366 x3035 to be added to the program mailing list. Young Writer's Festival - Geva's Literary Department coordinates an annual festival of plays written by area teens. Writers ages 13-18 are invited to submit short plays, and selected scripts will be given staged readings in the Nextstage. Geva Comedy Improv workshops! - Geva Comedy Improv is now offering two-hour introductory classes on the fundamentals of Improvisation. There is absolutely no experience necessary, and they will also be a great refresher course for the experienced! All workshops will take place at Geva Theatre Center and will be taught by current GCI cast members. The cost of the workshop is $20 per person per session and will take place from 1:30 - 3:30 PM on the following Saturdays: March 8, 2008 To register, email tryan@gevatheatre.org or call Improv Headquarters at 232-1366 ext 3066. Directing Fellowships - Directing fellows assistant direct Geva productions and may rehearse understudies. The 2007-08 Fellow served as Assistant Director on Geva Theatre Center's production of Doubt and directed SUNY Brockport's production of I Hate Hamlet. Brockport Alliance (ages 18+) - This program enables Geva's guest artist-educators to come in contact with undergraduates at SUNY Brockport by teaching acting, directing, and playwriting classes at the university, as well as providing guest lecturers.
