Before Edward in the Twilight Saga and Lestat in The Vampire Chronicles, there was Dracula. Bloodthirsty, lustful and evil incarnate; but above all - a gentleman. The Count journeys from his gloomy Transylvanian castle to the bustling streets of London, leaving death and destruction in his seductive wake.

This season, Rochester City Ballet, Writers & Books, and Geva Theatre Center have established The Vampires are Coming…to Rochester - a community-wide collaboration. The Vampires are Coming…was founded to cross-promote performances and events that have a vampire theme and take place in greater Rochester, New York throughout the 2011-2012 arts and cultural season. The anchor events for The Vampires are Coming…to Rochester are Geva Theatre Center’s production of Dracula; Writers & Books Dracula, and Rochester City Ballet’s production of Jamey Leverett’s The Blood Countess (February 3, 4 & 5, 2012). In addition, the founding partners have a series of other vampire-themed events that are listed on a new event calendar (link below). Other events will be added to the calendar as new cultural partners join the collaboration. For more information, click here.
To coincide with their production of Dracula, Geva Theatre Center has partnered with the Rochester Chapter of the American Red Cross to host a blood drive in the lobby of the theatre on October 31 from 7am to 2pm. Recent severe weather in various parts of the country has disrupted the collection of blood donations. The Red Cross is in critical need of blood donations and they are urging those who can give blood, to do so now.
Participants are asked to call 1-800-RED CROSS (1-800-733-2767) or visit redcrossblood.org to make appointments. Walk-ins are welcome. Individuals who are 17 years of age (16 with parental permission in New York State), meet weight and height requirements (110 pounds or more, depending on their height) and are in generally good health may be eligible to give blood. Identification is required at the time of donation.
As it is Halloween, participants will receive “treats:” a specially discounted ticket to see a Geva production, a ”pint for a pint” coupon from Fairport’s Moonlight Creamery for a pint of their delicious ice cream and discounts to Rochester City Ballet’s production of The Blood Countess. Participants will also have an opportunity to see the set for Dracula in situ on the Mainstage. Who knows, they might even catch a glimpse of a ghost, ghoul or vampire as well…

The production was rehearsed at IRT and scenery and costumes were built in the IRT shops. Dracula ran for four weeks there before moving to Rochester. Geva partnered previously with IRT on The Piano Lesson (2007-2008).
Since the Indiana Repertory Theatre was founded in 1972, it has grown into one of the leading regional theatres in the country, as well as one of the top-flight cultural institutions in the state. The company’s mission is to produce top-quality, professional theatre and related activities, providing experiences that engage, surprise, challenge, and entertain people throughout their lifetimes, thereby helping to build a vital and vibrant community.
The IRT remains the only fully professional resident not-for-profit theatre in the state, providing 100,000 live professional theatre experiences for its audience last season. These experiences included 41,000 students and teachers from 56 of Indiana’s 92 counties, making the IRT one of the most youth-oriented professional theatres in the country. A staff of more than 100 seasonal and year-round employees creates eight productions exclusively for Indiana audiences.
The IRT’s history has been enacted in two historic downtown theatres. The Athenaeum Turners Building housed the company’s first eight seasons. Since 1980 the IRT has occupied the 1927 Indiana Theatre, which was renovated to contain three performance spaces (OneAmerica Stage, Upperstage, and Cabaret) and work spaces, reviving this historic downtown entertainment site. As an arts leader in the state of Indiana, the IRT invites collaborations with other top-quality arts institutions, with the goal of making Indiana a vibrant home of cultural expression, economic vitality, and a diverse, informed, and engaged citizenry.
